The phrase "brain game" has been applied to so much that it has stopped carrying information. It gets attached to matching games that are almost entirely chance, to reaction tests, and to anything with numbers in it. If you are looking for something that actually makes you think, the label will not help you.

There is a better test, and it takes one question: can this puzzle be solved by reasoning alone, or does it eventually require a guess?

That single distinction separates puzzles you can get demonstrably better at from puzzles where a losing run and a winning run reflect the same play. It is worth applying before you invest an evening.

The test in practice

A well-formed logic puzzle has exactly one solution and a path to it that never requires luck. At every point there is at least one move you can prove is correct, even if finding it is hard. If you are stuck, you have missed a deduction — you have not encountered a wall that needs a coin flip.

That property has a pleasant consequence: being stuck is always informative. It tells you there is something on the board you have not looked at properly, which is a much more productive feeling than suspecting the game has cheated you.

Games that fail the test are not necessarily bad. Plenty of them are enjoyable. But they are not exercising the thing they claim to exercise, and if you are choosing deliberately, the difference is worth knowing.

Four that pass

Sudoku Master is the reference case, and the reason Sudoku has outlasted every puzzle fad since is exactly this property. Despite being made of digits, it involves no arithmetic at all — the numbers are just nine distinguishable symbols. Every valid grid is solvable by elimination, and guessing is never required, only faster in the short term and disastrous over a full grid.

If you are learning it, start with whichever digit already appears most often on the board. It has the fewest remaining legal positions, so it is the easiest to place with certainty, and it is usually where the first breakthrough lives. On harder grids, write your candidates down — spotting two cells that can only hold the same two values is what unlocks the rest.

Crossmath Challenge puts arithmetic into a crossword grid, where equations have to read correctly across and down at the same time. The arithmetic itself is deliberately basic; the difficulty is entirely in the ordering.

The technique that makes it tractable: solve the intersections first. A cell belonging to two equations is constrained from both directions and has far fewer valid candidates than a cell in a single equation. Fill the isolated cells early and you will produce a grid that looks nearly finished and cannot be completed.

Sokoban Master is the hardest of these and the most rewarding. You push crates onto target squares, and crates can be pushed but never pulled — so a crate shoved into a corner is stuck forever. Levels become unsolvable long before they look lost, and recognising a dead position is the actual skill.

The expert habit is working backwards: identify which crate must be placed last, because most levels have one target that blocks access to the others. Solve in the wrong order and you trap yourself with a board that still looks fine.

Memorize and Repeat the Shape is the odd one out, because it tests working memory rather than deduction. It still passes the test in the way that matters — there is a correct answer, no luck, and a technique that measurably helps.

That technique: memorise the pattern as a single continuous route rather than as separate line segments. Tracing the path your eye takes is far more reliable than trying to store each connection independently, and the difference becomes obvious once the grid expands and diagonals appear. At that point, remember where the shape departs from horizontal and vertical rather than recording every line.

The one that partly fails, and why it is still here

Solitaire Quest does not fully pass. Not every deal in classic patience is winnable, and no amount of correct play rescues a dead deal.

We include it anyway, because the part you control is genuinely skill-based and most players get it wrong in the same way. The instinct is to send every ace and two to the foundations the moment they appear. It feels like progress and it strands you later, because low cards in the tableau are precisely what let you relocate sequences.

The stronger habit is to prioritise uncovering face-down cards and emptying a column over banking foundation progress early. Every card you reveal expands the moves available for the rest of the deal, and an open column is the most flexible resource in the game. Then, when a deal genuinely cannot be won, recognise it and deal again — that is a skill too, not a surrender.

The honest caveat

We should be careful here, because this genre attracts overclaiming.

There is reasonable evidence that people get better at the specific puzzles they practise. There is much weaker evidence that this transfers into general cognitive improvement in daily life. Getting good at Sudoku makes you good at Sudoku.

That is a perfectly good reason to play. Solving something difficult by reasoning is satisfying on its own terms and does not need a health claim attached. We would rather say that plainly than tell you a puzzle game will make you smarter, which is not a thing we can support.
